A superb antique English silver swing handled Georgian bread basket fully hallmarked and dated 1774 made in London by Burrage Davenport. His workshop was at 6 Foster Lane, London and he is celebrated for making exceptional silver baskets.This fine basket is of oval shape and decorated with a chased swag design interspersed with alternating pierced geometric patterning. The Neoclassical style, (of which this is an example) was first evident in the work of architects and cabinet makers, and by the 1760s it had been taken up by silversmiths. Greek key motifs and beadwork applied to rims were among the most popular.
This Basket stands on a pedestal foot and is in excellent condition with no damage
It is has an engraved cypher to the centre and is perfect for use as an elegant as a cake, fruit or bread basket
