16th Century Rare Bust Of St. Joseph Holding The Christ Child In Carved Wood And Polychrome

Description :

"16th Century Rare Bust Of St. Joseph Holding The Christ Child In Carved Wood And Polychrome"
Attributed to gifted Lombardy sculptor Giovan Angelo del Maino 1475-1536. A rare sculpture due to the tenderness depicted of Joseph in the position usually reserved for Mary in similar Madonna and child compositions holding his son the Christ Child here holding the little globe indicating that He is the Salvator Mundi. Notable for the expressive hands, beard and direct gaze of Joseph, similar half length busts that reflect something of the relief tradition of 15th-16th century Italian sculpture can be seen in elevated niches in churches in Lombardy and the Veneto by Del Maino.
