Florentine Roundel Of A Roman Emperor In Terracotta

"Florentine Roundel Of A Roman Emperor In Terracotta"
A larger sized relief in modeled terracotta, perhaps a bozzetto for one planned later in marble or bronze. The subject with his characteristic nose may be Caligula, Germanicus or Galba for example and the likeness has a particular emotional resonance which make it transcend similar decorative classicizing reliefs. The sculptor's detailing of the neck muscles, veins and jawline likely studied directly from life are reminiscent of studies of similar old men in profile by Leonardo Da Vinci. The fingerprints of this sculptor were pressed into the once soft back of the relief, a further indication of the sculpture being a one of a kind drawing in clay by a capable artist.
