Description :

"Edmond van Coppenolle – Flowers in a Vase – Circa 1880"

Pierre François Edmond Van Coppenolle was born in Renaix, Belgium, on 29 June 1846. Pupil of Louis Aumont, in 1872 he moved to Montigny, close to Moret-sur-Loing in France to work at Eugène Schopin’s newly opened porcelain workshop. Here he produced sketches and studies in Indian ink, wash and crayon, which were in turn used to decorate porcelain vases and chargers.

Coppenolle was renowned for his floral oil paintings. Although influenced by the 17th century painters from the Netherlands, he was also aware of the growing fashion in France for garden flowers and more natural-looking flower paintings. His floral still lifes also show a clear Impressionist influence, emphasising the use of a colourful palette and a robust brushstroke.

Edmond Coppenolle died on 4 January 1915 at the Hospice des Vieillards Saint-Séverin in Château-Landon, France.
