17th Century Dutch Portrait Of Nobleman - Circle Of Samuel Van Hoogstraten

"17th Century Dutch Portrait Of Nobleman - Circle Of Samuel Van Hoogstraten"
A sensitively rendered and richly coloured mid- 17th century oil on panel portrait of an nobleman by an artist in the circle of Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678)

The elegant sitter is depicted three quarter length in his finery, with his body slightly inclined, his head is turned to greet the viewer. His fashionable attire leaves us in no doubt as to his status!

Black was the most expensive dye and therefore was a very fashionable colour - as an indicator of wealth, taste and understated elegance by European elites. In a fashionable gesture he holds his cloak in position, fingering the shimmering fabric with one hand. The artist has excelled at rendering this often difficult to capture part of the human anatomy.

Much is also made of the play of white against black as the sitters costume is contrasted with expensive white linen and lace in the form of his exquisite and finely worked collar and cuffs.
The as yet unknown sitter is ruggedly attractive with his tumbling auburn hair flushed cheeks and a moustache, his gazes meets the viewer with a soft and pleasing expression.

Samuel van Hoogsraten (1627 - 1678)
Van Hoogsrtaten was a Dutch painter, printmaker, and writer on art. He painted genre scenes in the style of de Hooch and Metsu, and also portraits. He is best known, however, as a specialist in perspective effects, notably in his peep-show boxes, which show a painted toy world viewed through a small opening.

Only in his early works can it be detected that he was a pupil of Rembrandt. Hoogstraten visited London, Rome, and Vienna, worked in Amsterdam and The Hague as well as his native Dordrecht, and was a man of many parts. He was an etcher, poet, director of the mint at Dordrecht, and art theorist.
This fine painting is presented in an excellent state of conservation and is ready to hang and enjoy in richly coloured antique swept wooden frame with gilt slip.
