Attractive three-quarter portrait of a man in a black coat and ruffled shirt. Pastel on paper signed on the right towards the middle "Hamm". Very good condition, with a minor wave in the upper right corner. Original frame in wood and gilded plaster with a palmette motif.

Jean Frédéric Hamm was a pastel portrait painter and miniaturist active in the first half of the 19th century in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region (eastern France). He was born in Geneva on November 4, 1779, the son of a shoemaker. Professor of drawing at the college of Lons-le-Saunier (Jura) until 1817, His known pictorial work covers a period between 1806 and 1843. His miniature portraits are highly sought after and have reached high prices at Bonhams, Christie's, etc. His pastel portraits can be found in various museums in the Franche-Comté region.

Frédéric Hamm died in Dijon on November 19, 1859 at the age of 80.
