Primaldo Mónaco – Portrait of a Girl – 1963

Primaldo Mónaco was an Italian-born Argentinian artist, painter and teacher.

He was born in Bagnoli del Trigno, province of Campobasso, Italy, on February 17, 1921. He settled in Argentina with his family when he was four years old, adopting Argentinean nationality. He graduated as a National Professor of Drawing at the "Prilidiano Pueyrredón" National School of Fine Arts in 1948.

In the late 1940s he was one of the founding members of the core group of the Concrete Art-Invention Movement, together with Raúl Lozza, Alfredo Hlito, Tomás Maldonado, Juan Melé and Ennio Iommi, among others.

Subsequently, he made a study trip to Italy, France and Spain. He taught drawing and painting at the "Prilidiano Pueyrredón" National School of Fine Arts, the "Manuel Belgrano" School and the National School of Dance. He also had an extensive activity as a teacher in the private field. He was recognized as a great master of Argentinean painting.

His work is mainly known for his portraits, still-lifes, landscapes and murals, characterized by the stylization of the figures and the use of soft colours.

From 1948 he took part in numerous salons. He was invited to the Hispano-American Biennial in Havana (1954) and to the Sao Paulo Biennial (1957). He exhibited individually in Buenos Aires, Miramar and Rosario and in Italy, Brazil, Peru, Cuba, obtaining numerous prizes throughout his artistic career.

Primaldo Mónaco died in Buenos Aires on February 4, 2004.
