Franz Windhager studied at the Vienna Academy with the painters Christian Griepenkerl and Franz Rumpler and from 1900 at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte. Study trips took him through Germany and to Italy. In 1909, he became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus. During the First World War, Windhager worked as a war painter in the Russian and Italian theaters of war. This work was painted in 1918, the year of the painter's return to Vienna, where he began to concentrate on urban views and colorful genre scenes.
