Born October 7, 1863, Paul Madeline studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Early in his career, Madeline supported himself by working at a publishing house. In 1894, at the invitation of the poet Maurice Rollinat and the painter Leon Detroy, Madeline visited the la Creuse, a charming countryside near Limoges. In la Creuse, Madeline met and befriended many artists of the École de Crozant, including the school’s Impressionist master, Armand Guillaumin. From 1902 till his death in 1920, Madeline worked as a full time painter. His favorite locations to paint included Brittany, the South of France, and the Crozant.

Madeline exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1894, ‘97, and ’99. He was also appointed a permanent member of the Salon d’Automne and the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. In 1908, with artists Henri Lebasque and Maurice Chabas, he founded “La Société Moderne.” In 1926, six years after the artist's death, the Salon des Indépendants presented a major retrospective of his works.
