Hippolyte Ribbrol – A Stream in the Woods – 1878

Description :

"Hippolyte Ribbrol – A Stream in the Woods – 1878"

Oil on canvas painting titled by the artist (in French) "A Stream in the Woods, Around Orléans" presented at the Salon de Paris in 1878.

Louis François Hippolyte Ribbrol was a French landscape painter and potter. Born August 30, 1839 in Blois (Loir-et-Cher), son of a wood merchant, he studied in Paris, where he was a pupil of the painter Thomas Couture (1815-1879). Couture had an independent workshop which rivaled the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and where he taught, among others, Édouard Manet. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1877 and 1880. He mainly painted landscapes around Orléans, where he lived after his marriage and where he worked as a drawing teacher. He won the Davoust prize in 1911. His son Fernand (1872-1937) was also a landscape painter, although their styles were quite different.

The exact date and location of his death are unknown, possibly around 1920.
