Édouard Debat-Ponsan, French artist born in Toulouse, studied with the famous painter Alexandre Cabanel in Paris. Under Cabenel's tutelage he mastered the academic genre, expanding his choice of subjects into farm life and allegorical scenes. The Parisian Academy awarded him no less than 4,000 francs for a study trip to Italy, where he became inspired to start painting portraits. In the early 1880s he ventured to the Middle East, arriving in Istanbul which inspired one of his most famous paintings, The Massage at the Hamman, which is now in the Museum of Augustins in Toulouse. This beautiful work embraces the rural idealism for which the artist is best known, combined with realistic elements and details.
