19th Century Oil Painting Large Genre Scene Farewell Signed Félix Gérard

"19th Century Oil Painting Large Genre Scene Farewell Signed Félix Gérard"

Félix Gérard – Farewell – Circa 1890

Large format oil on canvas painting representing a farewell scene for a fishing vessel, likely on the quay of Fécamp, in Normandy. A group of people are gathered on the quay, a mother and her son in the foreground. In the background are the characteristic cliffs of this region of the Normandy coast. Professionally restored, the painting is signed and bears an inscription on the stretcher with its title: "Farewell".

Félix Isidore Joseph Gérard was a painter, art dealer and art expert. Born in Namur (Belgium) on July 12, 1864, he was the son of Félix Laurent Joseph Gérard, a Belgian art dealer. The family moved to Paris in the 1870s, where Félix father opened a framing workshop and began to collect and deal in paintings by old masters and modern painters such as Gustave Courbet, Stanislas Lépine, Edouard Manet, Eugène Boudin or Alfred Stevens. In 1893, he opened the Galerie Félix Gérard at 7 bis rue Laffitte.

Félix Gérard (son) began as a painter and worked mainly with his father at the gallery. After his father’s death, Félix Isodore renamed the gallery to Félix Gérard Fils, which operated until at least 1914. As an art dealer, he sold numerous works of art to European and especially American collectors. Thanks to his intermediation, several impressionist paintings and some works of his are today in many art collections and museums in the United States.

His pictorial work is scarce and covers a period from 1885 to 1900. He specialized in large format genre scenes depicting characters from Norman fishing villages. Retired from business as a dealer and art expert, an activity that his children would continue, Félix Gérard died in Monte Carlo (Monaco) on June 1, 1937, and is buried in Paris.
