Henri Brugnot – Portrait of Mme Roche – 1903

Charcoal and pastel portrait of Blanche Henriette Broche (née Oudart). Dedicated in French and signed in ink: “to my good friend L. Broche. H. Brugnot”, and dated 1903 below in pencil. Work made on paper mounted on hard cardboard, with the annotation on the back: "Portrait of Mrs. Broche, old friend and neighbour of Portets at Marianil (?)".

Henri Brugnot was born on March 24, 1874 in Lyon (Rhône). Painter of landscapes, portraits and pastel artist, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1890, where he was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Poncet. Then in Paris, he was a pupil of Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau. He first worked in Paris, then moved to the South of France, to Portets, near Bordeaux.

He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français where he received an honourable mention in 1901, then at the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a member. He painted many landscapes of Spain. His portraits were often executed in pastel.

Henri Brugnot died on January 20, 1940 in Uzès (Gard).
