A prolific Neo-Impressionist artist, Maximilien Luce came to Pointilism by way of the Groupe de Lagny. With Gausson and Cavallo-Péduzzi, Luce began experimenting with Seurat's new style in the mid 1880s. In 1887, Luce joined the Société des Artistes Indépendants. He would exhibit with the Indépendants numerous times throughout his career. In 1889 and 1892, Luce exhibited with Monet, Cross, Ensor, Gauguin, Pissarro, and Lemmen at Les XX exhibition in Brussels. In 1909, he was elected Vice President of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. Following Signac's death in 1935, Luce was elected president. However, in 1940 he resigned from the position in protest against the Vichy regime. Luce's art was inspired and informed by his political convictions. A comittted anarchist, Luce spent forty-two days in prison in 1894 as a suspect in the assasination of President Carnot. Contact for more information.
