Naturalia Specimen - Red Mediterranean Coral

"Naturalia Specimen - Red Mediterranean Coral "
A branch of red Mediterranean coral on an antique ebonized wood candlestick. During the Renaissance, red coral was symbolic of Christ's blood and his sacrifice. In Sicily, namely the city of Trapini, sculptors excelled in the art of coral carving, often fashioning fragments of this precious material into effigies of Christ or the Virgin or integrating them with other precious materials to form baptismal founts, chalices, candlesticks and other objects of ritual devotion. Perfectly suited for the contemporary or antique-style cabinet of curiosities.
